It Sounds Gross

06.10.10

Every time someone enters a hot tub for a little R&R, they leave a little something behind. It is completely unintentional, it is not planned and if be known, it is even a little embarrassing.

It Is Gross

I am talking about the sweat, exfoliated skin and body oils. Sorry, but no matter how clean a person might consider themselves to be, they will always leave their DNA behind. If the temperature is high enough, the body can sweat out about a quart an hour. -Yuck! That is a quart of pure urea for every hour of soaking by each person sitting in the spa.

Let?s do some math. Two people, 3 times a week for an hour each session. That totals 6 quarts of sweat, a full gallon and a half every week!

Reducing The Gross Factor

Here are some practical solutions to keeping your spa crystal clear while enjoying a session of hydrotherapeutic bliss.

1. Keep your sanitizer levels up
2. Clean your spa filter every week.
3. Use a Scum Ball to remove body oils and eliminate ?ring around the collar?.

Spending time in your hot tub does not have to be an experiment in human hygiene care. Keep the water clean with regular maintenance and invite as many friends to join you along the way. You will be glad you did!

What to Do When…

06.10.10

They say the only thing certain is death and taxes, well I would have to disagree. In our line of work hot tubs break down. It is a certainty. Granted some more than others, but eventually service will be required.

Be Prepared

If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of needing hot tub service, repair, or spa parts, there are a couple of things you will want to have readily available.

1.      Your Spa Make – It is always a good idea to know who made your spa.
2.      Your Spa Model – Most models vary vastly.
3.      Phone Number – The phone number of your support team is important for getting your spa up and running fast. Besides, most technical support companies don?t charge a fee for troubleshooting.

Save Time and Money With Orchard

Hot tubs are so easy to fix. I know, I know. One look ?under the hood? and you are sure to see tubes, wires and electronics that seem to be all over the place, but rest assured the tools required to remove and replace any of the components equate to a philips head screw driver, a flat head screw driver, and an adjustable wrench (great technical support doesn?t hurt either). Seriously! There isn?t anything that can?t be fixed or replaced in a matter of minutes.

The next time you need help whether it?s to get a handle on your spa water chemistry, to replace a spa pump or to find out why your spa is making so much noise, just reach out and touch someone. It is free, friendly and fast. You just might be glad you did!

The Party’s Over…now what?

06.01.10

Now What?

The party is over, the guests have cleared out. Even Uncle Willy has decided he has had enough and has moved on. Now it is time to clear the debris field, take out the trash  and find out where that new pungent smell is coming from. Oh, and maybe it is time to attend to the hot tub.

The hot tub was a big hit, but now it is time to pay the piper. It looks a little beat up, the water color is definitely off and the cover just plain smells. So let?s get started!

Start with the Cover

Remove the cover completely and rinse off with a hose. You may even want to scrub it down with a solution of bleach and water. This will keep any mildew from building up. One of my favorite tips on cleaning the cover is to Febreeze it after a good scrub. I just like the way it leaves my spa cover smelling so good.

Rinse Down the Cabinet

Since we already have the hose out, we might as well rinse off the cabinet. Once the cabinet had been wiped down, use a good conditioner to restore it to that ?new? look. Any scratches can be removed with the use of a furniture touch up stick from any home improvement store.

Treat the Water

First thing to do is to remove the filters and run them through the dishwasher. That?s right, the dishwasher! This will break down the body oils and brighten the filter to new again. Shock the water and test for sanitizing levels. Make sure your PH and Alkalinity stay on track and once everything has been brought back to balance, use a clarifier to bring back the brilliance to your spa water.

Repeat!

No sense in wasting any time. Start planning your next backyard bash right away and be sure to invite Uncle Willie. You know you will be glad you did!

Chinese Hot Tubs Warning

04.07.10

Don’t be a fool and  Check out www.alibaba.com and search for Hot Tubs and, surprise, surprise you will see all the rubbish flooding into the UK from China being advertised by various rat infested factories, all to be sold in UK, by dodgy here today, gone tomorrow traders.

Chinese Counterfeit Hot Tubs

Many of these con artists are claiming their spas are made in the USA, in particular Florida, when in fact they are just using American names and address to promote their spas. Even funnier are the prices of this junk, where internet companies are claiming to be selling at half fictional retail prices with fictional savings when in fact they are working on massive margins as the stuff they are bringing in rubbish (this saves a long tedious and frightening description) and they are relying on the correct prices of good stuff to sell what is in many cases dangerous to users and not in compliance with any EU standards, many just list false logos.

Remember everything in these spas are made in China and poor copies of original American designs and products, stuff that has taken years to perfect is copied by an unlimited supply of cheap labour about that is not paid until the supplier is paid. Naturally the wrong or cheap substitute materials are used and there is no chain of custody or paper trail many components are one off efforts to meet the order of a get rich quick importer.

Not just spas are being copied in China everything is, it is a joke, names are just changed and copies of Western and Japanese goods abound all handled by unscrupulous traders.

True Story

A man who wanted to buy a spa. He searched the internet looking for a deal, frequenting eBay and bargain web shops. He fell in love with a shiny looking hot tub, hundreds of jets, steel structure, LED light show, a stereo and a TV !

£4000 was such a good price and with interest free credit and nothing to pay for the first year, he ordered it and booked the crane for installation right away.

“It’s not heating ! ” …..was the cry after just one month. The company sent a new heater. “I can only get BBC1 in Chinese !”….was the cry, but that didn’t matter anyway because the TV stopped working the next day.

“It’s leaking ! “…..was the cry, but after several months it had now proved impossible to contact the dealer….Araldite it was to be.

Fast approaching was the day he had to start paying for the tub, he was coming to the end of the “nothing to pay for the first year” The list of faults had reached their peak. Further leaks, it had stopped heating again, the radio was just an object on the door and the LED’s had forgotten what their job was.

The original dealer had now vanished and the finance company were his only point of contact. They did NOT want the spa back. “Mmmm…..what can I do” he considered. I’m certainly not paying for a crane to lift the spa out.

He ordered a builders skip and cut the spa up with a chainsaw.

Spa Buyer Warning
Currently advertised on E-Bay England, are numerous Chinese imported spas without correct English Electrical Safety Certification or compliance with English/European Standards.
Please note – this does not mean that ALL spas on E-bay are non-compliant

Some of the issues of note, with these spas:
(One or more of the following)

1. No electrical safety certificate
2. No C-Tick (EMC compliance)
3. No filtration – What-so-ever !
4. No surface skimmer
5. Insufficient suctions per pump
6. False claims of USA manufacture
7. Absolutely no after sales service, support or spare parts

These are serious issues, and in some cases, serious breaches of English electrical safety standards as well as entrapment dangers amongst other issues.
Whilst the inclusions and price look like great value for money on these spas, they are in fact a very bad buy.
Not only are you buying a non approved spa, endangering your family, friends, and home, but also risking a lack of service and support that can only be provided by seasoned spa dealers in your local area. The electrical (and other) components utilised on these spas are not available freely within England, and nothing is directly compatible.
If you are contemplating purchasing a spa from E-bay, we highly recommend you insist on proof of compliance with English Standards, Electrical Safety approvals, before you purchase.
If anyone has had the misfortune to have been swindled by these spa suppliers, and wish to help shut them down for the benefit for all consumers, please email us with your experience and information.
We have already had people reporting their bad experiences including all of the above issues. Unfortunately in at least one case, the supplier is fully aware of their non compliance, with false information as to the product, on the invoice. We are sure this is not an isolated incident, and that all suppliers are aware of these issues.

In addition to the complete spas, individual spa components such as pumps without compliance, have also been advertised and sold.
Please be wary of this expanding problem – if in any doubt – don’t bid ! – Buy from a reputable dealer, namely Orchard Spa & Hot Tubs.

In Canada, Europe and Australia, it is a legal requirement that a pump connected to a pool or spa must have two suction points teed together some distance apart. There have been a number of injuries and deaths caused by underwater entrapment in pools and spas which resulted in this legislation being instated. If a high-flow pump is connected to a single suction point, the force of water travelling through it can be enough to trap a person underwater and drown them. However, if there are two suctions teed together, when one is blocked by skin, clothes, or hair, the water can travel through the other suction point, reducing the suction force and preventing entrapment.

Suction fittings must also be manufactured to a specific standard. They must have the correct surface area, the right number holes which are the correct size and are then matched to the power of the pump. This is to reduce the entrapment risk posed by underwater suction points.  These approved suction covers are designed to stop hair being sucked through the holes in the cover and being spun into a knot behind it. Major international brands use approved and rated suction covers in their spas, plumbed correctly, with 2 suction points per pump (a filter may also count as a suction point).

Unfortunately there are often unbranded spas for sale on eBay, that have two pumps with just one suction point each. Both suction points are right next to each other; doubling the suction force! This means that when both pumps are running there is a huge force sucking down into the bottom of the foot well. These products could be especially lethal for children or those with long hair.

Spring Is Upon Us

03.17.10

By all appearances it seems that spring is upon us. The temperatures seem to be coming up and with this winter being exceptionally cruel for those in colder climates, spring will most certainly be the most highly anticipated event of the year.

Officially, spring starts March 20th. This means more attention will be given to preparing for our annual migration into the back yard. Clearing off decks, cleaning patio furniture, some yard work and let?s not forget buying gas for the Barbeque. Visions of pool parties, cookouts and maybe even some late night entertaining come to mind.

1.      Drain the spa ? If your water has not been changed in some time, a quick drain and fill will remove the ?heavy? water and replace it with fresh water that will be easier to manage. No one wants to sit in a pool of chemicals and there is nothing more inviting than a soak in a hot tub with crystal clear water.

2.      Replace the filters ? Most homeowners ignore this crucial step in proper hot tub maintenance. Just because it looks clean, doesn?t always mean that it is. Often the residue of sweat, dead skin and body oils are still in the paper element of the filter, but they can?t be seen because they have been bleached out. Regularly changing the filters will keep your spa running more efficiently and prolong the life of your spa.

3.      Clean the plumbing ? Use a plumbing cleanser and conditioner. This will keep any ickies from building up in your plumbing lines while conditioning your equipment like pump seals and gaskets.

4.      Inspect and clean your cover ? The cover has been exposed to the elements all winter. It is due for a complete inspection for damaged foam or tears in the vinyl. 90% of all heat loss occurs at the water?s surface. Don?t ignore this first line of defense against inefficient heat loss. It is bound to have a coat of dust and dirt on it. Use a good cover cleaner that will condition both the vinyl and the stitching. They say that you get what you plan for. Take some time out be good to yourself and plan for a great backyard retreat. I guarantee you?ll be glad you did!

The health benefits of spas

02.19.10

Buying a hot tub is a common dream that we all share. A good hot tub serves many purposes to give you a nice feeling. Not only do you relax but also you can regain your tired muscles and increase your blood circulation level to get the best emotions. This personally works for me. If I take my blood pressure before I go in the hot tub it is generally a little high. This is normal for me. I go in the hot tub for 40 minutes on a temperature of 38 to 38.5 re take my blood pressure and get a lower than normal reading. Generally I am 140/85 but after a 40 minute session I can get as low as 120/69.

Sleeping

The warm water causes your body to reduce internal temperatures allowing you to drift into a deeper sleep.
Hot tubs are a natural sleeping remedy so there is no need to resort to over-the-counter drugs.
